Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of DuVernay's daughter occurred on the 24th of August 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay began to develop her artistic and creative talents as a child due to her aunt Denise. She worked as an evening nurse in order to give her aunt to have the time she needed during the day for the love of art, literature, and theater. DuVernay enjoyed the movie West Side Story, which she brought to her. DuVernay was taught by her mother that the arts can serve as a tool for activism. DuVernay had her mother who was aware of her social circle and taught her to use the arts as a means to express herself. DuVernay was raised in Compton with her parents however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where the family of DuVernay's father was for many generations. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historical march of the Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The time she spent in Selma Alabama was later the inspiration to write a script for a film based on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she received degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay developed an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to the watch and search the home of a particular juror. After being disappointed in journalism by the tasks she was assigned, DuVernay decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a junior publicist right after college. She started The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. She also started several lifestyles and promotional networks, including Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective. She is an actress well-known for her roles in American Experience (1987) and A More Perfect Union (2009).
